Module Competence Goals
To provide a solid basic knowledge about Navigation, Air Law and Operational Procedures, which builds up the theoretical proficiency needed to safely fly an aircraft under VFR and IFR conditions.

Content
    1. This module consists of content of the JAR-subjects “Navigation”, “Air Law” and “Operational Procedures”. To achieve a closer combination of theoretical and practical training, lessons may also be given during the two practical semesters
      • Navigation (JAR 060, 061)
        • Basics of navigation: The solar system, The earth, Time and time conversions, Directions, Distance
        • Magnetism and Compasses: General principles, Aircraft magnetism, Principles of standby compasses and compass systems
        • Course lines: Great circle calculation, Rhumb line calculation
        • Charts: General properties of different projections, Representation of meridians, parallels, great circles and rhumb lines, The use of current aeronautical charts
        • Triangle of velocities: Different speeds (IAS, CAS, EAS, DAS, TAS, GS), Construction of triangles, Rule-of-thumb
        • Inertial navigation: Principles and practical application, Accuracy, reliability, errors and coverage, INS operation
        • Radio navigation: Basics, Radio Aids (ADF, VOR, DME, ILS, MLS), Radar, LORAN-C, Determination of position, and speed vector, Current developments
        • Instrument flight procedures: Basic principles, Holding, Instrument approaches, Circling approaches
        • Satellite navigation: Basic principles of GNSS, GPS and GLONASS, Accuracy, reliability, errors and coverage, Current developments
        • Hybrid navigation by means of flight management systems (FMS): Principle, Determination of position and speed vector, Accuracy, reliability, errors and coverage, Current developments
        • Polar navigation: Course and position monitoring, Grid navigation, Navigation beyond the magnetic compass erratic line

        • International Air Law: International Conventions and Agreements, Aircraft Accident Investigation, Application of Air Traffic Regulations on International and Intercontinental flights
      • Operational Procedures (JAR 070)
        • Regulations on Commercial Air Transport (JAR-OPS1 / 2+5. DVO LuftBO:Legal Basis, Air Operator Certificate and Supervision, Oerational Procedures: All Weather Operations, Instruments, Equipment, Communication & Naviagtion Equipment, Aeroplane Maintenace, Flight Crew, Flight&Duty Time Limitations and Rest Requirements, Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air, Security
        • Air Traffic Regualtions for Long Range Flights: Regional Supplementary Procedures, NAT MNPS Operations Manual, RVSM Procedures
